Zverev’s Triumph: A win for the books

Sascha Zverev has realized his dream by winning his first Grand Slam title. The tour warmly congratulates him on this success.

Sascha, you finally did it. You are a Grand Slam champion. How does it feel and what does it mean to you?

SZ: First I would like to thank my wife, my family and my coaching staff for their support. Without them this wouldn’t have been possible. I am overjoyed and proud to have achieved this goal, even if it is just a stopover on my way to the top.

What do you think made the difference in beating Rafa on Sunday?

SZ: Well I think it was a mixture of irrepressible will and really good squash. I was 4-1 behind in the first set and thanks to my mental strength I was able to pull myself out and get into the tiebreak. After losing the second set, I focused on the title and was able to show my best squash after that. The bottom line is that I think it’s a combination of my strength and the pressure from Rafa to be number one that made me leave the pitch as a winner. Unbelievable when you consider that Rafa lost 1:3 but won one point more. laughs mischievously

What changes for you after this groundbreaking victory?

SZ: Nothing, I’m still highly motivated and focused. I knew beforehand that I could beat anyone on this tour. Now I just want to repeat it again and again. laughs again

What are your next goals that you want to achieve?

SZ: For now, I want to stay healthy and fit. The next tournament is coming up soon, so I have something to make up for after the clear semi-final defeat last season. Now it’s time to take your self-confidence with you and continue to score points.

What is your ranking forecast for the end of 2024?

SZ: I want to be number one. Anything else would be a lie. I firmly believe that I can achieve this goal and will give everything to achieve it.
