FEDAL Squash Media Group AG wanted to know from the players what they appreciate most about the tour and what they are particularly proud of and many other questions.
What was the best experience on the tour?
Rafa:
No doubt, the hole first season. at that time all matches were very competitive and at a high level. Unfortunately for me, roger had at the end of the season a small lead of 250 points and took the nr 1 spot. But it showed the level of competition perfectly.
In terms of victories, it will be my first grand slam victory at Wimbledon. After i lost the first two grand slam finals in fiveseters, this one was incredible and special.
Roger:
One of the things I love the most is to come home after a big victory and have a cheat meal and a nice bubblebath. No, honestly there is no particular experience that comes to my mind. I like to hang out with the guys and have some nice conversations with them. We have some cool internal challenges and some quizzes we’re doing. Besides that I like to beat them on court.
Stan:
My first title in Shanghai last year was certainly my personal highlight.
Next to the pitch I like the quizz and a beer in the sauna with great conversation best. That we get along so well on and off the court means a lot to me. Of course everybody wants to win but we can be happy for the others as well.
What was your worst experience on the tour?
Rafa:
For me the worst experience is not a particular moment. it was much more a period of time after the injuries and surgerys.
I few matches after my comeback last year i were competing at a high level in terms of pysics. But mentally i were struggling to close out some matches. In three matches i had for instance match points. But a where not abel to use them. These moments were very complicated for me because i could not take any positive results with me. in order to gain confidence in yourself, positive results are important, which has not happened. It influenced my determination.
in terms of results,
the final at the us open 2017 which i lost against Roger was through. the fourth set tie breaker was crucial in terms for the number one in the race
Roger:
I was really disappointed after the first set in Madrid this year, where Rafa and I had a really big fight. But unfortunately Rafa had to pull out from competition, because of his knee that was hurting him too much. That felt really bad, because we were both in the zone and played some incredible squash. I always wanna win but never in this way. I was more disappointed than after a loss, because I couldn’t win this match in the usual way.
Stan:
The crash in the Shanghai final was a very shocking moment. In retrospect, everything was not so bad, but it could have been different. Sometimes you just need a bit of luck to get through such a moment unharmed.
I also remember the start of the 2018 season very painfully. After a close end to the first season in 2017, everything was super hot and motivated for the new season and there was a lot of speculation. Unfortunately, Roger and therefore a very important part of the season lasted until June.
Which experience surprised you the most?
Rafa:
Roger is without a doubt the best player in the past 1 1/2 seasons. But the fact that he just lost two games during this time is an incredible achievement. the level of the players among each other is minimal in my opinion, and yet he has always found a way to decide the game for himself.
Roger:
I think Stan’s title in Shanghai last year was really mindblowing in the way that he sealed the deal. Against me he should some of the best squash and after he had this blistering final against Rafa. Rafa was I think like 5:1 up in the second after a first set win and Stan was able to turn the tables around. I’d never thought Stan’s gonna win this thing. The biggest upset I can remember.
Stan:
Federes performance in the last 1 ½ years.
What do you like most on the tour?
Rafa:
For me it is the competition with the other guys. It helps in many ways, to stay fit and healthy, a reason to pay attention to my diet, it to be balanced, and of course it brings me a lot of joy.
Roger:
It gives me inspiration to workout and to push my limits to new levels. I like to suffer and play the big points with 100% focus. I play for the few moments, where I’m in the zone. In the end I just like to challenge the other guys and have some good times together.
Stan:
What I like most about the Tour is the competition among each other, that everyone is forced to increase their commitment and dedication to win matches and tournaments.
Which result are you most proud of?
Rafa:
My victory at madrid 2018. second match after my first comeback from the surgery
Roger:
The performance I showed against Rafa in last year’s Wimbledon. I never was so focused again like on these day from the first to the last point. It was also my first Wimbledon victory, which was also an extraordinary experience to me. I’m never pleased with myself but after this win I felt inner piece for like two days.
Stan:
The comeback in last season’s Shanghai final, the two semi-final victorys of Australian Open and Roland Garros, as well as the two wins over Federer.
What is your next personal goal on the tour?
Rafa:
First of all it is to stay heathy. My body had a few issues. so i need to protect and trest him carefully.
my second goal in terms of results is to stay compeditve and give me chances to win the most importend matches on tour.
Roger:
Bodywhise I feel like a have the form of my life. Actually I’m super fit and I’m living really healthy and I’m putting a big effort in my workouts. So I feel that right now it could be the chance to win the Grand Slam. I already have won all Grand Slams in a row but to win all in the same year is another level. So basically that is what I’m looking and aiming for. Besides that I want to win Wimbledon again this year and for sure I wanna stay healthy.
Stan:
My goal, of course, is to win a first Grand Slam. I feel hungrier than ever. Of course, this also has to do with the current preparation and the break. With every kilogram I lose, I believe more and more in my time that will come.
What do you wish for the tour in the future?
Rafa:
I guess the tour is improving continuously. Thats in my opinion a good sign.
Roger and I thought about playing the WTF in an new external location. London gave us players a top tournament for the first few years. But as the fedaltour continues to develop, a new location could be interesting and a step forward to increase the Fedaltour.
Roger:
I would like to collect a lot of money for our foundation to help some people in need. Further, I’m looking forward to introduce some new technologies to the tour like real-time challenges or the shotclock-watche.
Stan:
In the past, all of us had our problems and many breaks had to be made. I wish that after the Corona break we can finally play freely again and for a longer period of time. Of course this means that everyone stays healthy, fit and motivated.
I also hope that the tour will continue for many more years.
