Federer wins an epic Australian Open Final against his big rival Rafael Nadal. After five sets and three hours of breathtaking Tennis he seals the deal. It’s his seventh Grand Slam Trophy.
After an absolutely furious start from Nadal, which won the first set with 6:2 against a completely nervous Federer, the Swiss stroke back. He leads 3:2 in the second and had multiple chances to break, but Rafa again hold against it very strong. He fought back and won the second set 6:4. «I was so nervous in the first two sets. I was feeling really uncomfortable and it was like I was playing for the first time today. Rafa did an absolute great job in these moments. I never played against a better player than this Rafa of the first two sets.», said the swiss.
After Roger seemed dead and burried and had nothing to lose anymore, he started to relax but never gave up the match mentally. That was the point, when the match turned around. Rafa got uptight with the situation to win another Grand Slam after he won his last title in Madrid last season. He made too much errors and Federer came back a bit too easy. «Today I was at least on the same level as Roger, but I need to improve my mindset on the big points against him. I think it was fifty-fifty today and if I played like in the first two sets I can win the match!», said the spaniard.
After a 6:3 in the third, Federer had another good start to the fourth set. But Rafa seemed to focus again and it was really on the edge. After 3:3 Federer could win a couple of important points and everything went his way until the end of the set. 6:3 was the verdict again.
The decider, once again, had to choose the winner. Once again it was Federer that had the stronger will in the end. After leading 2:0, Federer showed his frontrunner skills and was never in danger to lose the deciding set. Federer is now in possesion of all 4 Grand Slam titles. «That was one of the hardest match I can remember. I had so many doubts, was constantly nervous as hell and Rafa was so hard to beat today. He is a real champion and showed his braveheart and his great character once again. It’s even more special to win the last Grand Slam in this fashion. I’m really thankful right now!», said the Maestro.
Now the tour will move on to Miami. The fight for the number 1 spot is on, because the opponents are ready to overthrow the king. For sure that will be one hell of a ride this season. Game on!
